1. Introduction:

Guaiacol is a naturally occurring organic compound, known for its flavoring properties. It is a clear colourless to slightly yellow coloured liquid (above 28 °C) or crystalline solid mass with a characteristic aromatic odour.

Guaiacol is manufactured industrially by methylation of pyrocatechol and is mainly used as a precursor for the synthesis of vanillin. It is also used in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients, flavouring agents & perfumery products.

  • Boiling Point: 204–206 °C
  • Density at 25 °C: 1.1 ± 0.1 g/cm³
  • Solubility: Soluble in Methanol, Chloroform, Ether, etc.
  • Explosive Properties: Non-Explosive

Product must be melted completely & mixed thoroughly before sampling for analysis. Strictly do not heat the drums above 60 °C (140 °F).

Uses & Applications:

Guaiacol is used as a building block for various chemical compounds some of which are as follows 

Flavours & Fragrances 

Guaiacol is used in the synthesis of flavours and fragrances such as Vanillin, Isovanillin, Eugenol, Isoeugenol, Zingerone, 4-Ethylguaiacol, and 4-Vinylguaiacol etc.

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients

Guaiacol is used in the synthesis of expectorants such as Guaifenesin and Sulfoguaiacol. Drug intermediates obtained from guaiacol are used in the synthesis of muscle relaxants and cardiovascular drugs such as Methacarbamol, Carvedilol, and Ranolazine.
